Your Recovery, Our Mission
Whether it’s planned months in advance or a bit more spur of the moment, we know surgery can be scary. But your recovery from surgery doesn’t have to be. UnityPoint Health - Pekin Surgical Unit is dedicated to providing adults with top-notch pre- and post-surgical care.
A Surgical Unit Stay
UnityPoint Health - Pekin independent physicians perform a variety of surgical procedures on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. The Surgical Unit most commonly sees inpatients following:
- General surgery (appendectomy, bowel resections, gall bladder removal)
- Joint replacements
- Urological surgery
- Ear, nose and throat procedures
When caring for patients, the attentive, highly trained nurses have two primary goals: to keep them comfortable and to prevent complications. To do so, they partner with the patients and their physicians to manage pain and ward off complications like blood clots and pneumonia by helping patients remain mobile.
The good news: Thanks to our dedicated, knowledgeable caregivers, most patients only stay in the Surgical Unit one to three days. And during that time, rest assured that our priority is seamless care that puts you on the best path to recovery. UnityPoint Health-Pekin practice of interdisciplinary rounds gathers experts from departments such as nursing, dietary, physical therapy, pharmacy and social services to discuss each patient’s unique needs, both now and in the future.
Coming Soon: An Even Better Unit
In an ongoing effort to provide optimal care for our patients, UnityPoint Health - Pekin is currently completing construction on a new Surgical Unit. This state-of-the-art floor will include all private rooms, which not only ensures maximum privacy, but allows loved ones the option to stay overnight.
The new unit also will include a gym where the physical therapy department can help post-op patients get back on their feet faster.
What won’t change is our whole-patient focus. UnityPoint Health - Pekin offers Surgical Unit patients an impressive array of resources, including on-site physical, occupational and speech therapy. In addition, our case management department—which consists of both social workers and nurses—works with patients to ensure they have a safe, comfortable place to fully recuperate, coordinating elements like home health care and physical therapy.
