Wound Healing

Wounds that do not heal in six to eight weeks with traditional medical care are considered chronic wounds. If you are one of the six million Americans suffering from chronic, non-healing wounds, turn to Pekin Wound Care Center for comprehensive would healing services.

Types of Chronic Wounds

There are many types of chronic wounds, or wounds that don't heal through conventional treatment methods. The most common types of chronic wounds include:

Diabetic Foot Ulcers

People with diabetes are at greatest risk for developing chronic wounds. Up to 15 percent of the estimated 17 million Americans with diabetes may suffer from chronic wounds, most commonly non-healing foot sores, also called diabetic foot ulcers, which can lead to amputation.

Other Types of Chronic Wounds

The remaining percentage of chronic wounds result from the following:

  • Chronic venous stasis ulcers (leg ulcers)

  • Pressure ulcers (bedsores)

  • Vascular ulcers

  • Ischemic ulcers

  • Infectious wounds

  • Chronic osteomyelitis (bone infection)

  • Any ulcer that persists six weeks or more despite medical care

  • Any ulcer or wound that reoccurs after healing

Causes of Chronic Wounds

While underlying causes of chronic wounds vary from patient to patient, the following factors can interfere with the wound healing process:

Chronic medical conditions, like diabetes, high cholesterol, severe burns, cancer or AIDS

  • Vascular disease

  • Elderly, immobile or obese

  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, poor diet and hygiene

  • Previous history of ulcers

  • Weak immune system

Chronic Wound Treatment
