For what conditions might a physician order a program at the Wellness Center?
Many physicians see the Wellness Center as a valuable resource for prevention of heart and lung disease, and might recommend a program for "borderline" patients - those who are at high risk for developing coronary or pulmonary disease, but who have not suffered a recent coronary or pulmonary event. Physicians also recommend active programs for individuals with diabetes, cholesterol problems, or those who are overweight.
How does the Wellness Center help cardiac rehabilitation patients?
Our cardiac rehabilitation program helps people with heart disease develop healthier lifestyles through education, nutrition, counseling and supervised exercise. Through a four-phase program, we help you return to a more active life.
Cardiac Phase I Beginning in the hospital setting, this phase includes exercise to prevent deconditioning, which can occur after prolonged inactivity. We also provide education for you and your family about your heart condition and treatment plan.
Cardiac Phase II This 8- to 12-week program continues your exercise and education on an outpatient basis. Three times a week, you will attend one-hour exercise sessions. During each session, Wellness Center staff will monitor your blood pressure and pulse with exercise.
You will also attend small education classes once a week immediately before and after an exercise session. Class discussions will focus on the anatomy and physiology of the heart, bypass procedures, angioplasty procedures, nutrition, medication, exercise and heart risk factors.
The goals during this phase are to increase and maintain your physical condition, provide continued education, offer emotional support and monitor your heart's response to exercise and treatment.
Cardiac Phase III This optional phase consists of maintenance exercise during classes Monday through Friday.
Cardiac Phase IV This optional phase consists of maintenance exercise in a setting that's similar to a health club Monday through Saturday. During this final phase, you can exercise when it's convenient for you during open-exercise sessions.
It is important that you talk to your physician and the Wellness Center staff about any new problems or concerns you may experience.
How does the Wellness Center help pulmonary rehabilitation patients?
Our pulmonary rehabilitation program helps patients with pulmonary disease to control and alleviate the symptoms of the disease as much as possible. We also strive to help our patients get to a point where they can carry out daily activities independently.
At the Wellness Center, pulmonary rehab patients receive lots of special treatment and one-on-one time. An entire team works on our patients' cases, including a physician or pulmonologist, rehabilitation coordinator, dietitian and other professionals who help with education.
Prior to admission to our program, you will have an evaluation to determine if you would be able to benefit from our program. This evaluation will help you with your daily activities.
Our program has four parts:
- Education - to help you and your family learn more about your lung disease.
- Dietary - our hospital dietitian will discuss with you the importance of nutrition in pulmonary diseases.
- Breathing Exercises and Relaxation - to help you better cope with tension, stress and decrease episodes of shortness of breath.
- Exercise and Energy Conservation - simple arm and leg exercises, plus walking and/or bicycling to improve muscle tone and stamina, as well as proper ways of body movement to conserve energy through daily activities.
You will meet in the Wellness Center three times a week. In addition, we will ask you to spend time at home working on various exercises. Once you reach a certain point in your rehabilitation process, pulmonary rehab is set up much like cardiac rehab in that there are two final phases.
Pulmonary Phase III This optional phase consists of maintenance "group" exercise during classes Monday through Friday.
Pulmonary Phase IV This optional phase consists of maintenance exercise in a setting similar to a health club Monday through Saturday. During this final phase, you can exercise when it's convenient for you during open-exercise sessions.
It is important that you talk to your physician and the Wellness Center staff about any new problems or concerns you may experience.
