Pekin Hospital offers very good skilled care with pleasant, personable personnel.

My wife and I really like Pekin Hospital.

Doctor was great and made conversation with us while we were there.

Our family is so thankful to have such a good hospital in Pekin.

It was not my intention to deliver at Pekin Hospital - I was pre-registered at a Peoria hospital... but I was having strong contractions, an ice storm was starting, and my doctor was gone on vacation. I drove myself to Pekin Hospital since I live less than a mile away. I was treated so well that I decided to deliver there.

As you know, a colonoscopy does not contribute to a “fun” day, but your staff made it a pleasant experience. I would recommend your facility to anyone - thank you.

They were expecting me. I had gone to the doctor’s office and they suggested I go to the ER. They called to let them know I was coming and everything was already taken care of when I got there. I appreciate having a facility available when I need it.

They already had my insurance information in the computer – nice!

I am a Type I diabetic, and they took very good care of me in the ER. The doctor and nurses were very thoughtful.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. I got turned around in the hall, and I think it was a doctor who took me to my destination!

This visit has changed my mind considerably about Pekin Hospital and the way things are run there today. It's the people that make a difference, and you can be proud of the staff you have.

What is an Electroencephalogram (EEG)?

An EEG is a noninvasive test used to detect abnormalities in the electrical activity of the brain. Brain cells communicate by producing tiny electrical impulses. In an EEG, electrodes are placed on the scalp over multiple areas of the brain to detect and record patterns of electrical activity and check for abnormalities. The technician will apply 23 small, flat, metal discs called electrodes in different positions on your scalp. The discs are held in place with a water soluble paste. The electrodes are connected by wires to an amplifier and a recording machine. The electrical impulses are recorded onto a moving piece of graph paper.

An EEG causes no discomfort. The electrode applied to your scalp will only record electrical activity and does not produce any sensation. It cannot "read your mind," measure intelligence or diagnose mental illness. The test is usually performed while the patient is awake and also during sleep. The patient may be asked to do certain things during the test such as breathe deeply and quickly for several minutes or look at a bright flickering light. If the patient is given a mild sedative to induce sleep, he or she will be unable to drive for 24 hours.

Test time may take up to two hours. The results of the EEG will help the physician diagnose and evaluate the presence and type of seizure disorders and causes of confusion. The results may also be used to investigate periods of unconsciousness, to confirm brain death in a comatose patient or to evaluate head injuries, tumors, infections, degenerative diseases, and metabolic disturbances that affect the brain.

An EEG must be ordered by a physician. The patient should have no more than four hours of sleep the night before the exam and should have no alcohol, sedatives or caffeine 24 hours prior to the exam. The patient should arrive with clean hair (no mousse, gels, hair spray), and someone must come with the patient to drive him or her home.

What are Arterial Blood Gases (ABGs)?

An arterial blood gas test is conducted to determine the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide dissolved in the blood and to determines the acid/base status of the blood. An arterial blood gas does require a blood draw from an artery, usually from the radial artery (wrist area), and there will be some local pain associated with the needle stick to obtain the blood. All ABGs are drawn by specially trained staff.

An ABG test must be ordered by a physician and may be drawn as an inpatient or outpatient.

What is Pulse Oximetry?

This test is a noninvasive test that measures the amount of oxygen in a patient's blood without the use of a needle. A small sensor (finger probe) is placed on the patient's finger, ear lobe or toe. The sensor is connected to a machine, which displays the oxygen saturation and pulse rate.

Test time usually takes only minutes, and there is no pain associated with pulse oximetry. The test results will determine if a patient may have less than the normal amount of oxygen in the blood.

Pulse oximetry must be ordered by a physician.
