Care You Can Count On
When a night or two at UnityPoint Health - Pekin is part of your “get better” treatment plan, the Medical Unit will be your home away from home. Staffed with nurses who are as well versed in the latest medicine as they are in TLC, the Medical Unit comforts body and soul.
Inside the Medical Unit
Designed as a one-stop care center, the Medical Unit hosts non-surgical patients who have been admitted to UnityPoint Health - Pekin for illnesses such as:
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Chronic heart or pulmonary issues
Rather than specializing in a single disease, the Medical Unit specializes in the patient. In order to deliver patient-specific care, our nurses have gained expertise in a variety of conditions and have earned accreditations such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support. Part of the reason they go this extra step is because UnityPoint Health-Pekin has implemented house-wide telemetry to monitor patients’ hearts wirelessly. Nurses have the training and knowledge to meet our mission of providing the highest level of care. So whether it’s everyday bedside care or an emergency situation, you can be sure the Medical Unit staff is among the best in their fields.
The Personal Touch
You’ll find that the Medical Unit’s care model looks a little different than the one offered at many hospitals. Among our innovations is the introduction of a care coordinator—instead of a typical charge nurse—who serves as a true resource to both patients and nurses. Our care coordinators aren’t tied to a desk; rather, they help patients get settled in their rooms, assist nurses in giving patients individual attention, and ensure that doctors’ orders are consistently carried out. The result: Teamwork that makes a real difference for patients.
UnityPoint Health - Pekin also promotes bedside reporting, which means that when nurses change shifts, they deliver shift reports right at the patient’s bedside. This approach not only keeps patients in the loop about who’s taking care of them, but ensures that patients are involved in their own care decisions. Improved communication translates to less patient anxiety and faster healing.
The healing process is also expedited thanks to a team approach that involves on-site specialists. The Medical Unit works with the hospital’s physical, occupational and speech therapy staff, as well as other departments, to coordinate everything patients need for a quick recovery. At UnityPoint Health - Pekin, we’re all on Team You.
